Not to dwell on things--but maybe this is the version of the street sign and mock-orange scene that I'm really looking for. Or maybe not--as a legendary person of my neighborhood is known to say.

I'm trying to get to the Viewpoint, but I have a feeling I won't make it till late. By then, it's bound to be quite a different place from what it was in the daytime.

Stand two feet apart, and the results may be miles apart.

I think, looking at this blog, you may understand what I mean.

It may seem sort of repetitive, but I've dealt with certain things a good deal more than once.

Some scenes are right on the cusp between interesting and boring. It can depend as much on you as the scene.

If you stare at something long enough, your brain will usually pull it together. But if you stare too long, your brain may end up pulling it apart. Both events are worthwhile.

At night, some scenes at first seem like nothing at all. You look at them, and they don't make sense. Your eyes and brain need to time to adjust to them to put the pieces together.

Anywhere where human beings live, there are some areas that receive a lot of human attention and other areas that receive less. The fact is that we don't have the resources to exert complete control over every inch of the areas where we live.

One very interesting thing about night is that there are many things you don't see, even when you look right at them. But I think you can say the same about things you see in daylight.

When the mock-orange is in bloom, you can smell it a block away.

The mock-orange is back. It was once much fuller, but it's still alive. That's the main thing.

And soon I'll post it.

Thursday, June 16, 2011

I saw it. For instance, through the tree branches.

Full moon tonight--but will I see it? Yes, I think so.

I'm always intrigued by the look of things on a summer evening, when everything is in bloom, and the colors are bright, but the sun is setting, and sort of absent--hidden behind clouds--and everything has a bluish cast.

The Viewpoint, just like a person, has its moods.

When I stare out into the distance, I may get a little side-tracked, but I always come back to the point.

So many photographers choose to stand in one certain place at the Viewpoint that there's a little patch of bare earth there. It's just to the left of the laurel, and somewhat to the right of the Lovers--the two old oaks that were brought to the Viewpoint from Denny Park long ago.

A photographer must make a multitude of decisions; that goes without saying. Issues of composition, focus, shutter speed and white balance all come into play--to name but a few of the many thing a photographer must think about. That's what makes photographers such interesting subjects. They don't usually move from place to place to much, but, while more or less standing in place, they move all over. They hunch over, they tilt their heads to the side, they press buttons. They're very theatrical.

Of course, I'm referring not to those who take a few snapshots, although I enjoy that kind, too.

I have in mind those who come equipped with tripods; those who are in search of the perfect shot. And that's just where my story begins. But I'll tell it another time.

If the weather conditions make for an unusually sublime scene, you can be sure a photographer will be on the spot.

In fact, it's most likely there will be a photographer on the spot for a long time. For instance, this one.

I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever see the Viewpoint again. But this couple hasn't lost sight of it.

It can be hard to decide which image of something is the definitive one, especially if the most interesting thing about an image is a motion. In this case, one must display two or more still images--or a moving image.

..."Our plants, our plants!" they scream. And then he wakes up, and his dad is yelling, "My pants, pants!"--trying to find his clothes as he rushes to get ready for work.

As I've expressed before, I believe many more dogs have made it to the Viewpoint than cats. But since cats are more stealthy, it's hard to be sure.

It's been a wet year. Recently water was discovered on the moon. Or maybe it was more water than previously suspected. In any case, there's water there.

It's not that my mind has gone blank. Just awfully busy. I think I've more or less missed the dogwood this year.
