Well, I could have taken some photos this morning, but I didn't. And now it's raining. And it looks like it's going to keep raining for the next few days. I'm glad I got some shots of the moon last night, because I don't think we're going to get to see it tonight, when it's truly full. Tonight is the night of the blue moon--the second full moon within one calendar month. Of course the moon will be there behind the clouds, but I don't think we're going to get to experience this rare occurrence here in rainy Seattle.

Wednesday, December 30, 2009

When I arrived at the Viewpoint this evening, there was an impressive almost-full moon. the sky was still fairly blue, and the moon, not officially full till tomorrow, was casting a strong reflection on the lake. Tomorrow I'll go back to see the blue moon.

Now that we've passed the winter solstice, I expect the days to gradually grow longer. I drove by the Viewpoint a little earlier today. I didn't have my camera with me. It was cold, and the sky was mostly gray or white, with some bands of pale blue showing through. I wasn't tempted to hurry back with my camera.

Monday, December 28, 2009

This morning the sky was overcast, very different from how it was even yesterday, but especially three days ago.

The play of light and shadow had an almost hypnotic effect.

There were no clouds in the sky this morning, and it was fairly clear. There was just a little haze on the east side.

The red things are a puzzle, but one that I imagine can be easily solved. If I just drive to where they are, I should be able to find out what they are and how they got there. This is not the case with some things.

Where Do I Begin?

Where do I begin? I mentioned previously a page from my journal from many years ago...

The Field in Early Evening

Not far from the Viewpoint is the Field. This evening, as dusk was coming on, there was a strange light effect here. It wasn't very dark yet, but the street light had come on and was casting a light that on the street appeared pink but on the grass, yellow-green.

The Other Evening

The other evening the lights were so beautiful as dusk fell upon the vast expanse one sees from the Viewpoint.

Unidentified Red Round Things

A group of four people speaking an Asian language I didn't recognize came to the Viewpoint while I was taking photos there this afternoon. One man in the group took a video of the others and of the view. A young couple had a long conversation in English while sittting on the bench at the north end of the park.

The Point was beautiful beside the left trunk of the Lovers. There wasn't much sun while I was at the Viewpoint. The colors were all rather quiet.

I noticed some round red things--on a building, I think--down near the south shore of Union Bay, close to 520 and near Foster's Island. I can't figure out what they are. I've seen them there for several days now. You can just barely see them in the photo, right below the Bay on the right side.

The Sentinel and Samaras

There was no one at the Viewpoint when I went there this evening. It was drizzling, and there was a fair amount of mist in the air, which gave the Christmas lights here and there an aura. I noticed that there were still a few dry leaves hanging lifelessly from the Sentinel, and some samaras, too. Then I thought of the artist Lucas Samaras and wondered how it came about that his name is the same as the name for the things that contain the seeds of the maple tree. When the wind blows, and they're ready to fall, the samaras get picked up by the wind and carried quite far from the tree where they grew. As I left the Viewpoint, I passed a person walking a dog--a woman, I believe.

Animated Feet

This evening, when I arrived at the Viewpoint, there was a lone figure under the laurel tree--someone wearing a gray hoody--probably male, I guessed. At the same time, I observed how wavering the curve of the Edge is, both vertically and horizontally. You think you know it, and then you realize you don't. I walked the length of the park and, passing the laurel, saw that there was a young woman on the other side of the person in the gray hoody. She was very animated. I can't remember exactly what she was wearing, but it but I do recall that it was an assortment of funky cold-weather clothes--sort of fleecy things with bold plaid patterns or something like that. What I remember best is how she gesticulated with her feet, as she sat there on the bench that encircles the tree, talking to the person in gray. At the south end of the park I saw a couple--a young man and woman just approaching the park from the opposite side of the street. I walked back. The entire time I was trying to remember the melody and words of Schubert's Der Atlas.

Frosty Morning

The ground was still frozen this morning, and there was a fair amount of frost on the grass and other surfaces. Blue and lavender were the predominant tones, especially in the distance.

A few people came by, jogging, or with dogs. The only ones who stopped were three women who did stretching exercises on the north bench.

Even above the street, there were purple and lavender clouds. Later the sun came out, but the frost lingered.

Like the Rainbow

As I was leaving the Viewpoint this afternoon, the thought occurred to me that when you go somewhere that you see in a "view," you find a place, not a view. A view is sort of like the rainbow: you can observe it, but you can never reach it.

Cold Day in December

It's been a cold day, following several other cold days. The earth at the Viewpoint was frozen, and people weren't lingering long when I was there a little earlier this afternoon.

Beyond the Edge

When I passed by the Viewpoint this morning, there was nothing to be seen beyond the Edge but fog. And this reminded me of the genealogist's addage "Work from the known to the unknown."

Tallest Tree in the Park

Early this morning, while at the Viewpoint, I thought to myself how pure the Sentinel looked, now that it's leaves are gone. The tree's structure is all there, in stark relief. Below, there are still quite a few trees covered in yellow leaves, among them the tallest tree in the park.

Heading Out

Well, off I go to the Viewpoint--before it's too late. Tonight I'm thinking of Japan and the many people there who helped me in so many ways, now many years ago.

When Far Away

At times I've been far away from the Viewpoint. And yet it's always there in the back of my head--if not in the fore.

Unruly Place

Now on to the next painting. The Viewpoint is a visually unruly place, and that simply can't be changed. With November almost half over, December will be here soon. The Lovers will lose their leaves, and the whole place will be a bunch of sticks. The mountains will be covered with snow. Then comes January and the glorious sunrises that sometimes occur in that month, due to cirrus clouds that seem to come when it's very cold--by Seattle standards.

Red Hair

I had quite a struggle with the Viewpoint today. I ended up painting out the figure and putting in a new one, considerably smaller than the previous, but also with red hair. We'll see how it goes tomorrow.

Bleak, Despite the Colors

The scene from the Viewpoint today was still autumnal, but there were new patches of snow on the mountains in many places, and the overall impression was one of bleakness. The little ceramic bowl with the fish painted on its side was gone, although the wheeled cart with a handle that appeared around the same time was still there. I wonder whether anyone will claim it.

Convenient Dog, Ownerless Bowl

It was sunny, cool and windy when I went to the Viewpoint just now. The crane I reported seeing a week or two ago, a little east of Foster Island, alongside the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge, is still there. Up at the Viewpoint, sitting on the wooden encasement that surrounds the laurel tree, there was a little Asian-style glazed cream-colored ceramic bowl with a cobalt-blue image of a goldfish on the side. There was water in the bowl, and the wind made the surface of the water quiver. It's been there for about three days. It survived a terrible thunder storm last night. All but the very last leaves are down from the Sentinel. The few that remain are all brown--mere vestiges of the glorious, golden, autumnal foliage that bedecked the tree just a week ago. A man came walking along with a tiny dog that looked to me like a miniature terrier of some sort. I asked what breed it was, and he said the name. I've forgotten it, but it was something Japanese. "It's a nice dog," I said. "Yes," he answered, and then added, "They're convenient."

Rain

I suppose I could have made it to the Viewpoint today, but it was so rainy, I just stayed inside. Maybe I'll go there still and do a little painting in the dark.

The Path and the Laurel

Today I re-did the path. I painted the benches out. It's hard to get them to sit right, especially since it appears I stretched out the space between the Sentinel and the Lovers, and one of the benches overlaps with this space. In reality the path varies in width from one end to the other. In a painting, representing it as it really makes it look like there's an error in perspective. I suppose if the benches were added, and they were done just right, this would help. But in any case, I fudged on the path a bit, too, so it would look more "correct." I spent a fairly long time on the laurel tree. I wasn't about to paint every leaf. I just made lots of blobs and lines in green, greenish white and brown to give more or less the right texture. I'm still not finished, but it's getting there.

Too Tired

I again spent many hours painting at the Viewpoint. I'm so tired I don't have the energy to write.

Beautiful Beast

I arrived at the Viewpoint a little after noon and painted till it was almost dark out. Once dusk set in, I could see certain spatial relationships that had been obscured by all the colors when it was lighter. I didn't finish the painting, but I should be able to get it done in the next day or two. It was like wrestling a beast. The Viewpoint is a beast--I've thought that many times. Beautiful--but a beast.

It kept on trying to rain. I didn't want my easel to get wet--or the painting--so I packed them into my car. Of course, the minute I got everything loaded into the car, the rain stopped. I waited a few minutes, then pulled it all out and started painting again--only for the rain to start up again. I went through this four times, if I remember right. I asked two different parties for their opinions on whether it was really going to rain. One young woman said no, maybe there would be a few more drops, but that it wouldn't really rain. But she was making out with a guy under the laurel tree most of the time, and I figured this might be putting a positive spin on her sense of reality. I asked a jogger, who smiled and said something like "nobody really knows." I finally called the Seattle Public Library to ask for the weather report and the information specialist I spoke with told me the weather report said it was going to rain in the afternoon. But I saw a little patch of blue in the distance, that seemed to be moving my way, and, feeling no rain for a few minutes, I got my easel and the painting out of the car again. There was no more rain till darkness set in.

Painting at the Viewpoint

I spent all afternoon painting at the Viewpoint. I situated myself on one of the little grass-covered hillocks. The light changed so fast, I could barely keep up with it. The sky was mostly clear, and it was reasonably warm, except for towards dusk, so there were a lot of people out. In fact, there was quite a crowd at one point. I was so busy painting that I didn't notice the moon coming up. (I couldn't see it from my vantage point.) It must have been wonderful when it first rose from beneath the horizon. I caught sight of it just as I was packing up. It looked full, although tomorrow is the day it's officially full. There was a woman sitting at the north bench, staring at it as though she imagined herself on the moon instead of earth. There were many subtle gradations of color in the sky surrounding it, which I've always found a wonderful phenomenon--the pale orange, rose and mauve tones one sees around a full moon, which is never exactly white, at least when it's relatively low in the sky. Later, after driving home with my easel, I came back with my camera.

3:33

It wasn't till 3:33 p.m. that I set out for the Viewpoint today, on what had been a sunny, warmish day. But the moment I went out the door, the sun vanished. I was full of regrets as I made my way to the Viewpoint, but when I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by a spectacular light show over the bay. Although there were even fewer leaves left on the Sentinel today than yesterday, down below, there was still plenty of brilliant fall foliage. There were several white sailboats moving about, punctuating the otherwise gray, blue-gray, yellow, red, green, orange and brown landscape.

I had two conversations. The first was with a couple. The woman wore red, the man beige. I told them it never seemed quite sure-fire to remember how to change one's clock at this time of year by means of the saying "Fall back, spring forward. I always wonder what's wrong with springing back or falling forward. It seems to me that both springing and falling can actually be done in either a forwards or backwards direction. The woman laughed and said, "Don't confuse me; it's taken me till now to get it straight." I think she was in her fifties or sixties. The other person I spoke with was a man who was walking from his car, a paper cup in hand, headed for the bench at the north end of the Viewpoint. The cup bore the logo of a well-known Seattle-based coffee company. I asked him whether he was drinking coffee or hot cocoa. He said, "Coffee." I said, "Decaf or regular?" He said, "It's got a little caffeine in it," just as he was sitting down on the bench. Then he said, "After all these years..." and hesitated for a second. I said, "...you deserve it?" He said, "No--it won't have much of an effect on me."

One Clump Left

There was nobody at the Viewpoint when I stopped by a few minutes ago. Most of the leaves had come down from the Sentinel. Only one small area of the tree still had leaves--a clump relatively close to the ground, at the side that faces the cemetery. There were lots of leaves, almost all brown, lying on the grass underneath the tree. The sky was cloudy, with no breaks. It was neither warm nor cold--just in between. Tomorrow it will be Halloween.

Before and After

Usually I go to the Viewpoint before writing about it. But this evening it will be just the opposite: I'm going to first write about it and then, after that, go there. That's a switch.

Sometimes it seems strange that we can rely on places to still be there when we set out for them. People are somewhat different in this respect. Sometimes they're there, and sometimes they're gone. How would it be if a place were suddenly gone. It does, of course, happen from time to time.

Now I can think of several places in Seattle that have gone through radical transformations--sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse...

I've been told that salmon used to come to spawn just down the hill from the east side Volunteer Park, near the cafe that for decades was a store. This is hard to fathom.

On top of this, an old man once told that decades ago, there were little deer living in Interlaken, and that they would come up from below to where the Viewpoint is. I hope my memory hasn't wandered too far off the path.
